What a year 2011 has been. Except certain commodities such as gold and oil, every other asset class has been hit. With Sensex down more than 20 pct YTD, 10 year g-sec yields up by almost 1 pct and rupee down by almost 14 pct against the dollar, it has been a poor year for investors. This was caused by a bout of strong global risk aversion led by the European sovereign debt crisis, high inflation in emerging markets and consequent monetary tightening, and lack of proper policy action in India. The only salvation came from commodities such as oil (up almost 26 pct in rupee terms) and gold (up almost 38 pct in rupee terms).

Are any of these likely to continue haunting us in 2012? Or will there be a new set of problems? Is the worst already behind us? That’s the million dollar question on everybody’s mind. The irony is few of us, if at all, have the right answers. Still based on evidence available today, one can hazard a guess.

What does 2012 have in store for the investor?
There is no doubt that growth has slowed down. The poor industrial growth numbers over the last quarter and the latest second quarter real GDP growth of 6.9 pct (manufacturing growth was a mere 2.7 pct whereas mining output contracted) drive the point home.

Is it going to change in a hurry?
Seems improbable. After all, more than a year of continuous rate hikes should have taken its toll on growth. And to top it up, inflation is yet to subside at least on a year on year basis, even though that is not the best way to look at it. The fall in the rupee hasn’t helped either, exacerbating the already high trade deficit and inflation by making imports costlier.

But aren’t we pricing it all in? Aren’t equity valuations cheap and yields already near 2008 highs?
True. But stocks can get cheaper still? Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent. Remember, we are still looking at Sensex valuations with respect to FY13 earnings which price in a 16-17 pct growth over FY12. Whereas FY12 earnings growth is already being revised down to 10 pct, expected FY13 growth can be downgraded further if macro indicators worsen.
Also, the Sensex earnings yield (basis forward PE of 13-13.5 as per FY13 earnings estimate) at approx 7.5 pct is still short (approx 0.8 pct) of the one year bond yield. Historically, equity markets have come out of a bear phase once Sensex earnings yields have been higher than bond yields by more than approx 50 pct i.e. the ratio between Sensex forward earnings yield and bond yields has been around 1.5. On this basis, valuations seem to be in a fair zone rather than being screaming cheap. For Sensex yields to become 1.5 times of bond yields today either the Sensex will have to be de-rated further or the bond yields will have to come down significantly. It is unlikely that either of these events happen in isolation. Rather a combination of both, i.e. a price or time correction in stocks coupled with the bond yields coming off significantly seems to be a more plausible scenario going ahead.

The initial part of the year 2012 (probably the first half) thus might continue to see high volatility as a result of the above. But as we move to the latter half of 2012, things should start improving. Bond yields are most likely to have come down quite some distance by that time (assuming that inflation moderates — month on month growth momentum in core WPI inflation is already showing signs of slowing down — and RBI starts cutting rates) and equities should be available at a real bargain by then. The second half of 2012 should thus be much better than the first.

What should investors watch out for in 2012?
Key risks to the above outlook might arise from adverse developments in the outside world including but not limited to the worsening of European sovereign debt crisis, a recession in the U.S. and Europe or a drastic slowdown in Chinese growth. Each one of these events will have the potential to give rise to a renewed bout of global risk aversion which will not be healthy for countries like India that depend on foreign capital flows to fund their current account deficits.

However, the key is still with Indian policymakers. Nothing mentioned above will be able to bring us out of the quagmire we have let ourselves in, if our policies are not right. Chronic diseases such as high fiscal deficit, lack of proper infrastructure and policy inaction have to be cured if we wish not to remain at the mercy of foreign capital flows. Foreign investors’ confidence in the India growth story, which has taken a beating of late, has to be rebuilt or reignited at any cost. Doing business in India has to be made easier to attract FDI and generate enough employment to harness the potential of favorable demographics. Otherwise, the advantage could soon turn out to be a disadvantage.

What should the investors do?
Investors should be wary of getting caught on the wrong foot as most of us did in the early part of 2009. Avoid selling at the lows. The first half of 2012 might give you a big opportunity to buy, though it is tough to correctly guess the time when that opportunity will arise. Don’t put your money in illiquid investments or investments with lock-in periods if that money is meant for equities. You don’t know when you might need it.

Likewise, staying on the sidelines might not be the best thing to do in these circumstances. Staying invested in markets is as important as anything else for long-term wealth creation, though you might choose to go underweight or overweight in accordance with the fundamentals. And this is surely not a time to go underweight on equities. Rather it is time to stagger your investments over the next six months and build your portfolio by way of STPs or Systematic Transfer Plans from cash to equities.

Just sticking to your asset allocation can help
Sticking to the original asset allocation will be of great help in the long run, in the scenario that might unfold in the near future. For instance, if one is supposed to invest in equities to the extent of say 60 pct of the portfolio, let him maintain that asset allocation at present. Under the above strategy, further downsides in equities will lower the allocation. The investor should then proceed to buy more equities to bring the overall equity allocation back to the original. This will automatically bring down the overall cost of equities in the portfolio and enable significant gains once equities bounce back.

Key triggers that can make the markets rise again
Even though the environment remains less conducive for a rally in equities, there is a lot of embedded value in stocks which should make lower levels unsustainable leading to strong bouncebacks following downsides. In terms of triggers, strong policy action by the government to bring about structural reforms tops the list. It is heartening to note that some activity has already begun on this front, the recent decision to allow FDI in retail being a case in point. Apart from that a solution to the European debt crisis (they are able to find a ‘buyer of last resort’ for EU nations’ debt) as well as a moderation in domestic inflation coupled with a fall in yields also has the potential to trigger a recovery.

Gold rises with equities again, open interest down

Bullion -- a traditional safe haven which has recently followed riskier assets -- tracked equities' gain on a rebound in U.S. consumer confidence and as investors across the board eyed further progress on a solution to Europe's debt crisis.

Overall market liquidity in U.S. gold futures fell to its lowest level since April, data from the most recent U.S. futures regulator showed, while investors continued to shore up bullion holdings by buying gold-backed exchange traded funds.

"It's all the macroeconomic events that are driving every single market including gold, not market fundamentals" said Ron Lawson, partner of commodities investment firm LOGIC Advisors.

"The fundamental reasons for owning gold are as good today as they were when gold was trading $300 to $400 lower."

Spot gold was up 0.5 percent at $1,719.10 an ounce by 3:00 p.m. EST (8:00 p.m. British time).

Open interest, a liquidity gauge, dropped to a seven-month low during the week ended November 22, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) figures showed, as managed money including hedge funds and other speculators trimmed its net long position in gold futures and options.

Lawson said that the open interest in gold futures dropped as some investors were turned off by counterparty risk after the demise of the now-defunct futures broker MF Global.

Meanwhile, gold holdings in exchange-traded funds hit a new record high last week, rising by more than 2.2 million ounces in just one month to around 70 million ounces, almost equivalent to total mine supply this year.

U.S. December gold futures settled up $2.60 at $1,713.40 an ounce. Volume was over 10 percent above its 30-day average, preliminary Reuters data showed, boosted by a brisk contract rollover ahead of December's first-notice day on Wednesday, traders said.

The higher-than-norm turnover was boosted by the closing out of the December contract and the initiation of the new benchmark February, which counted two lots traded.

Gains in commodities across the board led by crude oil and grains also helped lift gold.

HSBC metals analyst James Steel said that record retail sales after the U.S. Thanksgiving day holiday last week implied good jewelry demand for gold and silver and strong seasonal buying.

EURO JITTER, TECHNICALS EYED

Analysts said economic uncertainty also underpinned gold, as euro zone ministers struggled to boost their rescue fund and looked to the IMF for more help after Italy's borrowing costs hit a euro lifetime high of nearly 8 percent.

Earlier in the session, gold failed to extend gains after running into technical resistance at $1,719 an ounce near its 100-day moving average, a key technical support it breached early last week.

"Gold is trading very technically. With the contradictory information out of Europe, the market's on edge...and that thin volume has exacerbated the volatility," said Leon Westgate, analyst at Standard Bank.

In other precious metals, silver was down 0.4 percent at $31.94 an ounce. Platinum inched down 0.5 percent at $1,532.10 an ounce, while palladium was up 2 percent at $584.47 an ounce.

RBI raises repo rate by 25 bps, says may not need further hikes

(Reuters) - The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised interest rates on Tuesday for the 13th time since early 2010 but gave a strong signal it may be finished with its current tightening cycle as growth slows and it expects high inflation to ease starting in December.

The RBI raised its policy lending rate, the repo rate, by 25 basis points to 8.5 percent, in line with expectations in a Reuters poll last week.

It also revised down its growth forecast for the current fiscal year ending in March to 7.6 percent from 8 percent with a downward bias earlier, while sticking with its forecast that headline wholesale price index inflation will ease to 7 percent at the end of the fiscal year.

The likelihood of a rate move at its December review is "relatively low," the central bank said in a statement.

"Beyond that, if the inflation trajectory conforms to projections, further rate hikes may not be warranted," it said.

Investors took comfort in the prospect that India's steady upward rise in interest rates may be at an end.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield fell as much as 7 basis points to 8.69 percent after the policy statement, while the 5-year swap rate fell 10 bps to 8.30 percent. The main BSE index extended gains to as much as 1.1 percent before dropping.

"Clear direction from the RBI is now in place, that they are not looking at any more increase," Indranil Pan, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

The RBI under Governor Duvvuri Subbarao has been one of the most aggressive central banks anywhere and has continued to take its fight to inflation even as its global counterparts have refocused monetary policy towards promoting growth.

Subbarao maintained his hawkish view on Tuesday.

"While the impact of past monetary actions is still unfolding, it is necessary to persist with the anti-inflationary stance," he said in the policy statement.

The central bank warned that medium term inflationary risks in Asia's third-largest economy remain high due to structural imbalances in agriculture, infrastructure bottlenecks, and India's fiscal deficit.

"In the absence of progress on these, over the medium term, the monetary policy stance will have to take into account the risks of inflation surging in response to even a moderate growth recovery," it said.

Despite continued policy tightening, inflation in India remains sticky, with the headline wholesale price index up 9.72 percent annually through September, its 10th straight month above 9 percent and highest among the BRIC grouping of economies that includes Brazil, Russia and China.

Inflation in India is driven in large part by high food and global commodity prices as well as fiscal policies that spur demand, all of which is beyond the scope of monetary policy, prompting some critics to urge the RBI to relent in its tightening.

Meanwhile, India's economy grew at 7.7 percent in the June quarter, its weakest in six quarters, while industrial output growth was below 5 percent in July and August.

India gold ETF demand likely to explode

Reuters) - Demand for gold exchange traded funds (ETF) in India is likely to "explode" as investors get accustomed to "click-and-park" mode of investing, shying away from sagging stock markets and as high inflation eats into bank savings, a trade body head told Reuters on Thursday.

"Clearly people are seeing convenience in the form of ETF, going through the same broker which he has for equities," said Ajay Mitra, managing director - India and the Middle East, World Gold Council (WGC).

In the last four years, volumes in gold ETFs have grown over 164 percent.

Mitra said another reason for the attractiveness of paper gold is that unlike in jewellery there are no intermediate costs.

Currently, volume in gold ETFs in India, the world's largest consumer of bullion, is more than 15 tonnes--minuscule compared with the country's annual physical gold demand of 900 tonnes.

Gold prices in India have gained 29 percent since the start of the year, compared with just 15 percent gains in the stock market.

The WGC is working on a number of gold-based investment products, but they are still at the "concept stage".

"It is still work in progress. The government is looking at various options to fund the economy," said Mitra. He, however, declined to give details.

The council expects gold prices on India Multi Commodity Exchange to stabilise in between 27,000 rupees and 28,000 rupees ($549-$569) per 10 grams in October. This will boost demand during Dhanteras, the biggest gold buying festival, along with Diwali.

"There has been marginal build-up (in inventory) but September has also been bad month from volatility point of view," said Mitra.

With volatility at 21 percent, retailers had not stocked up, while other consumers were "not sure if tomorrow's price is better than today".

OPTIMISTIC

Outlook for gold in India is bright for the festival quarter during Oct-Dec due to the latent demand, Mitra said.

"The trade is optimistic that we will see a better Diwali this year... but they are still a little sceptical of the volatility in prices and they want volatility to ease off a bit. Demand is there and price is not the factor as consumers are aware of the returns that gold has given," said Mitra.

India gold demand rose 37 percent to 284.9 tonnes in the last quarter of 2010.

"There is latent demand and the conditions are conducive for cause and case for gold. As inflation rate is high, real interest rates is negative," Mitra added.

India's food price index rose 9.32 percent and the fuel price index climbed 15.10 percent in the year to Oct. 1.

The stubborn inflation has prompted the RBI to raise interest rates a dozen times in the past 18 months and its key policy rate stands at 8.25 percent.

The WGC said the flow of scrap, which is the raw material for gold refiners in India, has dried up.

"Indian refineries will have to find some other business or some other way to value add to that business," said Mitra.

How to File Income Tax Return Online

Filing incoming tax returns is not a laborious ordeal anymore. E-filing or filing tax returns online has made the process a whole lot simpler. E-filing of tax returns acts as one of the options for the direct tax payers in India. There are three different ways of filing returns online:

1. File returns using a digital signature. By this option there is no need for a paper return to be submitted.

2. File without using the digital signature. By this option the ITR-V form has to be filled. This form is a one-page receipt but also serves as a verification form.

3. Take help from an E-filing intermediary who makes the filing returns and filling the ITR-V form a whole lot easier.

DETAILS REQUIRED BEFORE LOGGING IN TO THE SITE

You will need an account with a bank that has net-banking facility. The bank must be one that has e-payments. If you have never e-filed your returns you will need to register with this website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and create a user name and password. You will need your PAN card number for the same. Your address details are extracted from the PAN.

You must enter other personal details carefully. The email address is important as all communication regarding this will be through the email address you provide. Once you have registered, an e-mail will be sent to you confirming registration after you activate your account. Once this is done, you are ready to file your income returns online. You must now download the appropriate ITR form.

STEPS TO FILE INCOME TAX RETURN ONLINE

* Log into www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and create a username and password.

* Go through all the heads of income under which you will be taxed and select the relevant Income Tax Return.

* Download the Return Preparation software and fill in the details of your ITR. The Income Tax India website also provides an instruction sheet on how to fill the ITR form.

* If there is any tax to be paid then make an online payment and generate the challan counterfoil along with the CIN. Now complete the Income Tax Return form with the details from the challan and CIN along with the payment details and the details of the bank through which the e-payment has been made.

* After this generate an XML file from the filled return using the software downloaded earlier. An XML is a format that helps the IT Department enter the details into its database.

* Now select the appropriate form on the left side of the page and click ‘Submit return’. Select the XML file and click ‘Upload’. Once the uploading is successful it will be acknowledged on the screen.

* Click on ‘Print’ to get a copy of the ITR-V form.

If the return has a digital signature then the filing process is complete upon the acknowledgement notification and the print out is required only to keep a personal copy. The RBI raised the repo rate, at which it lends to banks, by 25 basis points to 7.5 percent, in line with expectations in a Reuters poll. Wholesale inflation stands at 9 percent, roughly double the central bank's comfort level.

Policymakers in the world's big emerging economies that led the world's recovery from the financial crisis face a balancing act as growth slows but inflation stays high. A stalling U.S. recovery and weakness in Europe and Japan add to the challenge of managing inflation without choking growth.

Inflation trumps growth concerns for now. India's rate rise followed moves to tighten policy this month by China, Brazil and South Korea.

"Domestic inflation risks remain high," the Reserve Bank of India wrote in its mid-quarter review explaining its decision.

"Against this backdrop, the monetary policy stance remains firmly anti-inflationary, recognising that, in the current circumstances, some short-run deceleration in growth may be unavoidable in bringing inflation under control," it said.

Rising rates and slowing growth add to the headaches for an embattled government buffeted by criticism over persistent inflation as well as its handling of a spate of corruption scandals and its inability to push through reforms.

Some 15 months of rate increases in India are taking a toll on companies and investor sentiment.

Car sales growth slowed in May to its weakest pace in two years and investors have taken fright, pushing India's main stock index down 12 percent this year, making it Asia's worst performer.

Economists expect a further 50 basis points of rate rises in India in 2011, a Reuters poll showed this week, with the tightening cycle seen to be near its peak.

"While the central bank recognised that the 'global environment has changed for the worse' most of the comments remained hawkish," said Robert Prior-Wandesforde, economist at Credit Suisse in Singapore.

Stocks briefly swung into positive territory after the rate rise before dropping again in a broader global downdraft over worries about Greek debt. The index ended down 0.8 percent.

Bonds largely ignored the central bank's decision as it matched expectations. The 10-year benchmark bond yield fell 10 bps to 8.30 percent as global risk aversion pushed buyers into the perceived safe haven.

The RBI also raised the reverse repo rate , at which it absorbs excess liquidity, by 25 basis points to 6.5 percent. Last month, it said it would keep the rate at 1 percentage point below the repo rate.

Thursday's rate increase followed a sharper-than-expected 50 basis point rate rise in early May, although data since then has pointed to slowing momentum in India and globally.

India's annual economic growth in January-March slipped to a lower-than-expected 7.8 percent, the slowest pace in five quarters, as the rise in credit costs and inflation weighed on consumption and investment.

Purchasing managers' data for both manufacturing and services has indicated a further slowdown, prompting concerns from businessmen including H. M. Bharuka, managing director at Kansai Nerolac Paints.

"The paints industry is already seeing moderation in demand and the continuous increase in rates will hurt us further," he said. "We are expecting tightening of interest rates to dampen demand from auto and housing sectors."

SLOWING GROWTH, RISING PRICES

However, the RBI did not sound worried on Thursday about the growth outlook, even as economists trim forecasts, with many predicting the Indian economy will grow less than 8 percent this fiscal year after last year's 8.5 percent.

"Even as there is deceleration in some important sectors, notably interest-sensitive ones such as automobiles, there is no evidence of any sharp or broad-based slowdown," the RBI insisted.

Wholesale prices, India's main measure of inflation, rose more than 9 percent in the year through May, much more than expected. Reuters) - Seven economies are the potential drivers of Asia's rise over the next 40 years into a powerhouse that accounts for just over half of global output, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said in a report released on Wednesday.

In the report on Asia in 2050, the ADB said the dominant economies needed to avoid falling into the middle-income trap that has seen the development of other emerging markets stall.

If they can achieve that, some 3 billion people will enjoy prosperity a generation earlier than they otherwise would, the ADB said at its annual meeting in Hanoi.

"Yawning inequalities must be narrowed and -- as home to over half of the world's population -- Asia must confront a massive wave of urbanisation and changing demographic profiles," the ADB said, adding the region's urban population would nearly double to 3.1 billion people by mid-century.

Necessary reforms included improved governance and strong institutions -- which the ADB said was an Achilles heel for most economies in the region -- and tackling environmental challenges to ensure food and water supplies.

"Asia's rise will be led by China, India, Indonesia, Japan, (South) Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand," the ADB said.

The seven economies had a combined GDP of $14.2 trillion in 2010, 87 percent of Asian GDP, and a total population of 3.1 billion, or 78 percent of Asia's people.

The study found that by 2050, the seven could account for 90 percent of Asian GDP -- and 45 percent of global output -- even as their share of Asia's population falls to 73 percent.

Average per capita income across the seven countries would be $45,800 in purchasing power parity terms -- 25 percent higher than the global average of $36,600, the study found.

MIND THE GAP

The middle income trap, which sees per capita income stall before advanced-economy levels, usually occurs as countries try to change from resource-driven economies reliant on cheap labor and capital to growth based on high productivity and innovation.

The ADB said based on Asia's record over the past 25 years, there were three categories of Asian economies.

Seven -- Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Singapore and Taiwan -- had grown rapidly since the 1950s, "avoiding the middle income trap and becoming high-income developed economies in one generation."

A second group of 11, including China and India, have posted high growth since 1990 but now face the greatest risk of seeing per capita income stalling at middle-income levels.

The others in this group are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Georgia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

"Several of these economies, or the larger ones, could easily derail the enticing prospect of the Asian Century," the report said.

(Reuters) - Oil sat near a two-and-a-half year high scaled on fears of further supply disruptions from the Middle East and Africa and the euro edged off a five-month high against the dollar on Tuesday, with an expected euro zone rate rise already priced in.

Asian stocks fell, although shares in resources companies bucked the trend due to rising commodities prices that also stoked worries about global inflationary pressures, pushing silver to a 31-year high.

The European Central Bank is seen as certain to bump up on Thursday its key interest rate by 25 basis points from a record low 1 percent to curb price pressures, with investors expecting further tightening before the end of the year.

"For the ECB, an April interest rate hike is a done deal and one or two more hikes are priced in," said Masafumi Yamamoto, chief FX strategist at Barclays Bank.

A euro zone rate rise will widen the yield advantage enjoyed by the single currency over the dollar, against which it has appreciated more than 6 percent so far this year.

The Federal Reserve's intentions appear more finely judged, and investors will keenly parse the minutes of its last meeting, due later, for signals on the timing of the U.S. central bank's exit from its current ultra-loose policy stance.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a speech that a recent increase in U.S. inflation was driven primarily by commodity prices and unlikely to persist, although he added that the Fed would monitor inflation expectations very closely.

The euro sat around $1.4195, off a five-month high of $1.4268 reached on Monday. The single currency was up a touch around 119.75 yen, after breaching 120 yen on Monday for the first time in nearly a year.

The dollar rose 0.3 percent to 84.32 yen , edging closer to a six-month peak of 84.735 yen set on Friday.

SHARES DOWN

Japan's Nikkei share average fell 1.2 percent with investors still unsure of the long-term impact of last month's massive earthquake and tsunami and a resulting nuclear accident that workers are still struggling to contain.

The Tokyo market has recouped about two-thirds of its plunge in the days immediately following the disaster, but remains around 6 percent below its close on March 11, the day the quake struck northeastern Japan.

"There was a sharp drop in the Nikkei and we've seen a swift rebound," said Norihiro Fujito, senior investment strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.

"That's normal. But from now on people will start pricing in fundamentals and that will push the market gradually lower, so we'll see more moves like today in the coming weeks."

MUMBAI (Reuters) – The BSE Sensex posted its best weekly gain in 20 months and rose 2.5 percent to a two-month closing high on Friday , as investors picked up bargains from battered down stocks ahead of the quarter-end .

Software companies jumped after strong quarterly results and forecasts from global technology majors Oracle Corp and Accenture indicated a positive business environment for Indian IT companies.

"The numbers and forecasts from these companies, reinforce the fact that the business environment for Indian IT companies is good," said Dipen Shah, senior vice-president of research for private client group at Kotak Securities. The IT sector index firmed 4 percent.

The 30-share BSE index posted its best daily gain in a month and jumped 2.53 percent, or 464.90 points, at 18,815.64, its highest close since Jan. 25. All of its components closed in the green.

It gained 5.2 percent for the week, its best weekly gain since July 2009.

Market breadth was in favour of advancing shares and they beat declining ones in the ratio of 1.4 to 1. Around 336 million shares changed hands on the BSE, sharply higher than the 30-day daily average volume of 275 million shares.

"There is more money available to chase risk," said Sanjeev Patkar, director of research at Almondz Global.

"And when an asset (Indian equities) which has proven itself earlier, is now available at a reasonable price, people will obviously come and buy it."

The benchmark index is down 8.3 percent year-to-date as foreign funds withdrew around $1.8 billion.

It has under performed world equities sharply, and is one the worst performing major markets in 2011.

The index could recoup recent losses but will still end 2011 where it began, as inflation concerns could yet dampen investor appetite in an otherwise fast-growing economy, a Reuters poll found.

The poll of investment banks and brokerage firms, taken over the past week, sees the Sensex at 18,550 at end-June and at 20,500 at the end of the year -- not far from 2010's 20,509 close.

Top outsourcer Tata Consultancy Services firmed 2.3 percent on Friday. On Thursday, it had said it had received a contract to provide banking software technology solution to Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank.

Smaller rivals Infosys Technologies and Wipro gained 5.2 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.

Financials led the charge on optimism that India's economic growth story will stay intact.

Reuters) - U.S. bank Citigroup(C.N) said on Tuesday it was investigating a set of suspicious transactions based on what it said were forged documents by an employee at a branch in India.

The bank did not say how much money was involved, but a person familiar with the matter said the transactions may involve between 3 billion and 4 billion rupees ($67 million-$89 million).

"We recently initiated an investigation into a certain set of suspicious transactions based on documents forged by an employee involving a few accounts in our Gurgaon branch," the bank said in a statement.

The source, who declined to be identified, said the case involved 30 to 40 high net worth individual clients.

The bank said it has reported the matter to law enforcement and regulatory authorities.

BANGALORE (Reuters) – The BSE Sensex is likely to trade in a narrow range on Monday, tracking mixed Asian markets, with volumes expected to be thin for the last week of the year.

China's move to raise interest rates over the weekend in an effort to fight inflation is also likely to weigh on sentiment.

Shares in Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications, India's No.2 mobile carrier, may decline, a trader said, after elder brother Mukesh Ambani'sReliance Industries (RELI.BO) on Friday denied market talk it was planning to invest in the firm.

The market rumour helped drive up Reliance Communications shares by 10.5 percent on Friday, while other Anil Ambani group firms -- Reliance Power, Reliance Mediaworks (RELM.BO) and Reliance Infrastructure -- also closed higher.

The MSCI's measure of Asian markets other than Japan was up 0.1 percent by 0309 GMT on Monday, while Japan's Nikkei was up 0.6 percent.

The Nifty India stock futures in Singapore were down 0.01 percent.

On Friday, the 30-share BSE index climbed 0.5 percent to 20,073.66 points, its highest close in six weeks, backed by a rally in metal producers, but volumes were low.

Finance minister cautions over downside risks of growth momentum

Addressing the parliamentary consultative committee for his ministry, the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that India’s economy was getting back to higher growth, but faced many headwinds. He also cautioned that the government is concerned over certain downside risks which may upset the momentum.

Pranab Mukherjee presented an overview of the state of the economy and specifically highlighted the trade imbalance, volatility in FII (foreign institutional investor) inflows affecting the capital market, the rising current account deficit, the reduction in FDI (foreign direct investment) inflows to almost half in the last six months and, above all, the Euro zone crisis as major areas of concern.

India’s current account deficit is expected to touch 3% of GDP in the current fiscal. The jump in the current account deficit is largely because of the high trade deficit - $81 billion in the first eight months of the current fiscal. On the same time the drop in FDI too has rasied concern as in the first six months of the current fiscal it was reported $11 billion, down from $15.3 billion in the same period last year.

Though, the Finance minister sounded optimistic about the future and said that the government has taken several fiscal and administrative steps over the year to contain the price spiral and its efforts have yielded dividends. He further said there was a need to improve the public distribution system to ensure the people below poverty line get foodgrain at nominal price of wheat at Rs 2 a kg and rice at Rs 3 a kg. The finance minister also urged various stakeholders to be responsible in their assessment of the requirement of foodgrain if the government is to ensure that every needy person is provided for

Equity Mutual Funds:

Investment is done in very short term debt instruments like inter bank call money market, T bills, Certificate of Deposits issued by government. As investment maturities are short, they are not vulnerable to interest rate risk.
As name suggests, liquidity level is very high as investor gets money credited in his/her account within 24 hours of redemption.

Equity Linked Saving Schemes (ELSS):
These schemes are similar to equity schemes with only difference being it comes with 3 year lock in period and provide Section 80 C benefit under income tax. By investing Rs.1 lakh in any of the ELSS scheme available, an investor can save tax by claiming deduction under Section 80 C. Like equity funds, ELSS also invests in equity shares and subject to risks associated with stock market.

Open End and Close End Funds:
This is another type of classification of schemes. An open end fund is the one that sells and repurchase units at all times. An investor can buy or sell units from fund itself at prevailing NAV.
In close end fund, only one time sale of fixed number of units are made and investor can purchase units during that specific period. Closed end funds do not allow investors to buy or sell units directly from the fund. However to provide liquidity, close ended funds do get listed on the stock exchange and trade at premium or discount to NAV based on investorï's perception about fund performance and other factors.  BANGALORE, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Indian shares notched up their first weekly gain in four, despite closing a choppy Friday session 0.1 percent lower as investors booked profits following a four-day rally, supported by an upbeat domestic economic outlook.

 The benchmark index .BSESN rose 4.3 percent this week after being battered by a series of scandals, including issuance of telecom licenses at low prices and a bribes-for-loans scam that hurt the banking, real estate and telecom sectors the most.

 Earlier, a local court ordered all eight executives arrested in the bribes-for-loans investigation into judicial custody until Dec. 16, before it began hearing applications for bail. [ID:nSGE6B203Z].

 "The international markets and extension of the bail is weighing on the minds of the investors," said Ambareesh Baliga, vice president of Karvy Stock Broking.

 Real estate stocks led the decline on the day with top-listed realtor DLF (DLF.BO) dropping 4.5 percent and Jaiprakash Associates (JAIA.BO) slipping 4.3 percent, dragging the sector index .BSEREAL 4.3 percent lower.  Banking stocks, which had bounced back on expectations of higher loan demand in the fast expanding economy, also came off.

 Leading lenders State Bank of India (SBI.BO) and ICICI Bank (ICBK.BO) ended down 0.9 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, while the banking index .BSEBANK shed 0.9 percent.

 The 30-share BSE index .BSESN closed down 25.77 points at 19,966.93, with 17 of its components losing ground. The index had risen as much as 0.4 percent earlier.

 "Sustaining these levels is going to be difficult considering the holiday season is approaching and the foreign institutional investors could take a break, go into hibernation."

 The benchmark index is up 14.3 percent so far this year, bolstered by overseas portfolio investments worth $29.1 billion. A series of positive economic data in the past few days have lifted investor sentiment about the country's growth prospects.

 A survey showed on Friday business activity in India's services sector surged to a four-month high in November, driven by robust growth in new orders. [ID:nSGE6B2022].

 India's manufacturing sector expanded at its fastest pace in six months in November, on a surge in new business and a sharp rise in export orders, another survey released this week showed. [ID:nBMA009007]

 Official data on Tuesday showed India's $1.3-trillion economy expanded at a faster-than-expected 8.9 percent annual pace in the September quarter. The services sector, which accounts for more than 50 percent of GDP, grew 9.8 percent. [ID:nSGE6B000Y].

 Outsourcers bucked the trend as economic data from the United States, their biggest market, pointed to an improving economy with better labour market data, a sharp jump in pending home sales and a stronger-than-expected November same-store sales. [ID:nN02209260]

 Top-ranked Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.BO) rose 0.3 percent, while rivals Infosys Technologies (INFY.BO) added 0.9 percent and Wipro (WIPR.BO) climbed 0.7 percent.

 State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC.BO) ended 0.5 percent higher at 1,320.10 rupees after a government source said the explorer will soon sign a deal for a 25-percent stake in Kazakhstan's Satpayev exploration block. [ID:nDEL003734].

 Religare Enterprises (RELG.BO) rose as much as 4.3 percent early after it struck a deal to buy a majority stake in U.S.-based Landmark Partners for up to $171.5 million. [ID:nN02237557]. The shares gave up gains to close 2.7 percent lower at 489.05 rupees.

 In the broader market, losers led gainers in the ratio of 3.4:1 on volume of about 389 million shares.

 The broader 50-share NSE index .NSEI was down 0.3 percent at 5,992.80 points.

 Elsewhere, the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 .FTEU3 rose 0.3 percent at 1035 GMT, while the MSCI's measure of Asian markets other than Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS added 0.5 percent.
